In Cajun folklore, the feu follet (swamp lights) are balls of light that appear in the swamp at night and fly through the trees. Some believe they are wandering souls traversing the landscape, while others believe they are tricksters trying to lure unsuspecting victims into the woods to be lost forever.

In this collection, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of superstitious belief and tangible reality. Are superstitions, which often offer temporary comfort, destined to lead us to fear and shame? Is acceptance of the unknown and the seemingly random hardships that come with it, which often lead to temporary despair, better for our healing once the sorrow has passed? Can both types of belief coexist to be used as tools, or, as we examine long-term healing, does one do more harm than good?
